Year of our Discontent

The nation was shocked last Tuesday by the upset victory of Donald Trump in the Presidential election with his defeat of the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.  Dismissed as a clown and misogynist, Trump was expected to lose a close race to the better organized and better funded Clinton who had the endorsement of almost every newspaper in the nation.  What caused this tremendous upset victory?

Many pundits were saying before the election that Trump was going to get the vote of old white men who failed to embrace the “diversity” of a changing nation and many of his supporters were derided by Hillary Clinton as being “deplorable.”  Election night was supposed to be a coronation for Hillary and I myself fully expected this to occur.  However, something was rumbling up in the Rust Belt of the old Midwest.  All attention was on Florida and North Carolina, but I watched the returns from the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania.  Lackawanna County which includes Scranton was not going for the Democrats as much as it was in previous elections and next-door Luzerne County which has Wilkes-Barre as its major city was going shockingly for Trump.  No Republican had carried Luzerne since 1988 when the GOP last won the Keystone State.  In the western part of the state, Beaver County was also going for Trump.  This is a county that had not gone to the GOP since 1976.  Pennsylvania was going into the Trump column and spelled bad tidings for Clinton. It was not bigotry or hate that was driving this revolt in the heartland.  It was the resentment of the fact that globalization and mass regulation were doing bad things to areas outside major cities and that the people were being left behind in the new economy.    This “economy” was based on debt, propping up of the big banks and high technology that was confined to the coasts.   The new economy also included government spending and was benefiting areas like Northern Virginia which escaped the effects of the Great Recession of 2008-09.

As the economy left the Rust Belt behind, the people became angry not only at the loss of livelihood, but also at how they were being looked down upon by the people on both coasts as rubes.  They listened to Trump’s message of making America great again and gave Hillary a stunning rebuke that she will never forget as she is past her window of opportunity to ascend to the Presidency.  This revolt was a proper sequel to what happened in the summer when Great Britain voted to secede from the EU for some of the same reasons.

Areas of Britain were also left behind in this new economy and they were also resentful of regulations from EU bureaucrats in Brussels.  The vote to leave the EU was not confined to traditional Conservative areas of Britain, but was prominent in heavily Labor areas like Sunderland, Nottingham, Kingston-upon-Hull and the areas of Wales where coal mining was a part of the economy.  Many workers in the north of England voted to leave as they saw no benefit to being in the EU and they wanted self-determination for their Parliament in London.

The election of Trump and the British vote to leave the EU are the big stories of this year.  Perhaps the effects of these elections might minimal, but it is indisputable that the people still know when they are being lied to by the elites and when they are made fun of.  Let liberty reign.

The Era of the Clown

As of this writing, we seem to be in a grip of an invasion of clowns.  Creepy clowns seem to be roving all over America and world with stories of people being scared by people in funny makeup and that the wearing of clown costumes are now being discouraged by government officials.  To me, it seems to be little more than hype that has been created by the media to bolster their bottom lines.  What should really worry us is the massive infestation of clowns that is in an area known as Washington, D.C.

We have two clowns that are now running for office of the President of the United States.  They promise us the moon and stars and want us to be free from the pains of everyday life.  Just trust them and they will take care of all.  How far have we fallen from the idea of limited constitutional government where the federal government was felt in few places except for perhaps the post office.   All of that changed in the 1930s with the rise of the New Deal.  From that time on, the growth of the Washington government has continued unabated and that our liberties and freedoms are fast eroding and that the debt has risen to almost $20 trillion and will no doubt go higher.   We are now caught in a trap and have no conventional way to climb out without taking austerity measures that will be painful.

No, the American public will have none of that.  We are now reduced to being titillated by the proclivities of presidential candidates on both sides without thinking very deeply on the calamities that are upon us. This fact was well illustrated by Neil Postman who wrote in his best-selling book Amusing Ourselves to Death:

When a population becomes distracted by trivia, when cultural life is redefined as a perpetual round of entertainments, when serious public conversation becomes a form of baby-talk, when, in short, a people become an audience, and their public business a vaudeville act, then a nation finds itself at risk; culture-death is a clear possibility.

We are indeed in a state of cultural rot.  Reading of books has gone down with people huddled at their computers watching the latest “comedy” on TV which includes bad presidential candidates, various transvestites, raunchy jokes and navel gazing.  Where are the people that wish to create true beauty and peace in our culture?  No, the revelations of Donald Trump reflect the nature of the American people, a nation of culturally immature people that care little about the future and are only interested in the here and now.  Get it while you can because you can enjoy life just once.

If you want to escape the rot, please go to places like the Imaginative Conservative Website, Ligonier Ministries, Acton Institute and other quality websites that wish to restore truth and beauty in the land.  Political clowns won’t save us.  Only when a people humble themselves will any positive change occur.  Stop with the talk of America being the greatest nation on the face of earth or talking about our President being the leader of the free world.  We deserve NOTHING for our embracing a culture of death. God stated in his word:

For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low. — Isaiah 2:12 (ESV)

Two Tribes Go to War

Frankie Goes to Hollywood was one of the new wave techno bands that had a few hits in the 1980s.  They were famous for their song “Relax.”  However, they also had a hit that made it to Number One in the United Kingdom in 1984.  It was called “Two Tribes” and their MTV video showed U.S. President Ronald Reagan and then Soviet Premier Konstantin Chernenko fighting it out in the arena which symbolized the Cold War.

Tomorrow there will be a similar battle between two tribes but in this case it will be a “debate” between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton who won their respective nominations for the office of President of the United States.  CNN has drummed up the battle by showing the faces of the two nominees up close with an ominous tone stating that they face each other head to head for the first time.  This publicity sounds as if it were a big fight on the UFC circuit.

No doubt we will hear the bromides from each of the candidates stating that if one is elected that women and blacks will be chained in cages for years to come while the other accuses the other of being soft on crime.  It is essentially going to be a two hour slug fest with no new ground being plowed.  We will have analysts scoring points for each side that would make the judging from the Roy Jones-Park Si hun fight from the 1988 Olympics look remarkably honest by comparison.  No meaningful issues will be discussed like the never-ending war in Afghanistan, the disastrous interventions in Libya, Syria and Yemen that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives and the massive $20 trillion debt that weights on our country like a one ton iron yoke on one’s neck.  It will all be cosmetic fluff with “solutions” that no one really believes in.

However, the viewers in selected audiences will be amused with the antics and bloviations and will be asked who “won” the debate via satellite from CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and other outlets.  The people are hungry for solutions, but they will not find them in Washington.  They must find them from inside themselves and their communities for the politicians care little for them anymore.   It will be a non event that I will not miss.  However, if they bring back the great boxing announcer Jimmy Lennon from the dead to officiate the debate, I might reconsider.

Damned by Hillary

Last night, Hillary Clinton made some remarks regarding the composition of Trump voters at a fundraiser in New York City.  At the event, she called half of the Trump supporters “a basket of deplorables” and that many of them were, as she stated, “irredeemable” and are not part of “America.”  In this secular age in America’s history, it is remarkable that Hillary Clinton would use a phrase that is specifically related to the doctrine of atonement that is found in the tenets of Judaism and Christianity.

In the doctrine of soteriology, it is stated that men are redeemed by the Blood of Jesus Christ for the purpose of taking away and the washing away of sins.  In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were to offer sacrifices as mandated in Pentateuch by God for the purpose of covering sin and was a foreshadowing of the future redemption by Jesus.  We, as Christians, are saved by the work of Christ and that we show our gratitude by performing good works as an outward sign of our salvation (Ephesians 2:10).

In the doctrine of limited atonement, it is stated that Christ died for those who would believe in him and that all others were shown no mercy by His Grace (Romans 9:15).  However, it is not for us to know who are and are not redeemed so it is incumbent on us to tell the story of God’s Love and Christ’s atonement and forgiveness and that they can act on the message by God’s Grace.

Hillary Clinton has left her Christian Methodist roots and now is engaging in a mission to save the world with the power of the State instead of the power of the gospel of Christ.  Hillary Clinton stated in an address to the American Legion on August 31 that America is THE “indespensible nation” and that it is “the global force for freedom, justice and human dignity.”  Hillary seems to be almost a secular imitation of Aimee Semple McPherson, the woman preacher who founded the Foursquare Gospel church in Los Angeles in the 1920s.   In the eyes of the progressives, if the voters, as a people, choose Hillary, she will draw all men and womyn to herself and be included in the paradise of diversity where peace and freedom will be at last be achieved.  Ilana Mercer in her recent column quoted Clyde Wilson on the neo-puritanism of Hillary which replaced the Christian zeal of the past with the progressive advocacy of a perfect world free of Christian “sinners” and that Hillary and her allies think that “they are the chosen saints whose mission is to make America, and the world, into the perfection of their own image.”

Yes, we are the “sinners” in the United States that are not part of “America” as Hillary Clinton stated.  We as people, who are the damned, must be made powerless by the wise people who run the bureaucracies in DC and that we must not stand in the way in the march of the people toward secular Zion.

If we are not a part of “America” as Hillary claimed that composes many of the people that reside within America’s borders are, could we, as foul sinners, make an atonement for our “sin” and march barefoot in the snow to New York City and obtain forgiveness for our sins at the Stonewall Inn like what the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV did many centuries ago at Canossa?  To Hillary, there is no more talk of the “Body of Christ.”  There is only the body known as “America” and if we are outside of Hillary’s grace, are we to be eliminated as foul infidels?

Religion is inescapable.  The question is who do we owe allegiance to?  God or the State.  We are Wordsworth but unlike that old Twilight Zone episode, we are not obsolete.

The wisdom of Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn

The stage is now set for the General Election in November with Donald Trump going against Hillary Clinton in the Presidential race.  Once again, many people on both sides of the ideological spectrum are proclaiming this election the most important election in our lifetimes.  This line is bandied about because the office of the President is a very powerful position that decides how the executive agencies are run and what nominees are named to the Supreme Court and the lower courts.  Many are fearful that actions by such a powerful person would lead to the diminution of their liberties.

The question we should ask ourselves is how could just one person have so much power over our lives.  The answer shockingly enough lies within the voting public that elected people in the past that amassed power to themselves.  Among this group of people were many Presidents.  This trend is not new.  Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddhin wrote various books on the dangers of democracy in three books, Liberty or Equality, Menace of the Herd and Leftism.    In them, he excoriates democratic rule which he calls very unstable and leads to tyranny and centralization.  He notes that Revolutionary France was the wellspring of many of the problems that faces people today as the result of government power.  No doubt Kuehnelt-Leddhin would have agreed with Lord Acton that democracy generally monopolizes and concentrates power.    The wealth of quotes from this man are full of wisdom and eye opening.  They include the following:

Even 51 per cent of a nation can establish a totalitarian and dictatorial règime, suppress minorities, and still remain democratic; there is, as we have said, little doubt that the American Congress and the French Chambre have a power over their respective nations which would rouse the envy of a Louis XIV or a George III were they alive today.

Democratism and its allied herd movements, while remaining loyal to the principle of equality and identity, will never hesitate to sacrifice liberty.

Fifty-one percent of a nation can establish a totalitarian regime, suppress minorities and still remain democratic.

Indeed, it seems that the more we vote, the less freedom we have.  We should wake up and call for mass de-centralization of power and abolition of many of the central agencies like the CIA, FBI, ATF, NSA and TSA that have corroded our liberties.   Perhaps the upcoming Brexit vote in Great Britain will give us a ray of hope.

Shameful AIPAC

Today, almost all of the remaining presidential candidates spoke before the AIPAC convention in Washington DC.   AIPAC, which stands for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, has been instrumental in urging the United States government to maintain strong ties to Israel including providing  financial and military assistance.  The mission of AIPAC is the following:

The mission of AIPAC is to strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of the United States and Israel.

Cooperation between the two countries is advantageous for both nations. As America’s bipartisan pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC urges all members of Congress to support Israel through foreign aid, government partnerships, joint anti-terrorism efforts and the promotion of a negotiated two-state solution – a Jewish state of Israel and a demilitarized Palestinian state.

Why, shall we ask, should we give billions of dollars to a country that does not involve the defense of this country?   It is halfway around the world and far from our shores.  Why also should we support a Jewish state where most other nations are derided as racist for not allowing immigration of people whose culture and religion are different from others.  I can think of the nation of South Africa which excluded blacks from political participation until recent times.   That many progressives, including Hillary Clinton, support these policies is the height of hypocrisy.   At the AIPAC conference today, Hillary Clinton stated the following:

Candidates for president who think the United States can outsource Middle East security to dictators, or that America no longer has vital national interests at stake in this region are dangerously wrong.

It would be a serious mistake for the United States to abandon our responsibilities, or cede the mantle of leadership for global peace and security to anyone else.

What is this “mantle of leadership for global peace” she is talking about?  We are exhausted from fighting in the Middle East for the last 25 years and spent between $4 to $6 trillion in fighting losing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Not only have we lost, we have also stirred up a hornet’s nest of terrorism that was unheard of just 30 years ago.   AIPAC might think that we in America have bottomless pockets to support their selfish interests.  However, the game is up and it is time to tell Israel that they are on their own.

Hillary’s Escape Act

The GOP once again failed to take advantage of Hillary Clinton’s disastrous policy in Libya.  Going through hours of testimony, the GOP did not press for Hillary’s explanation of why she urged President Obama to go ahead and aide rebels fighting Muammar Gaddafi.  Gaddafi, who ruled this North African nation for over 40 years, was ousted with the help of the Americans and suffered a summary execution at the hands of his captors.  Hillary’s boast of “we came, we saw, he died” has been rightly excoriated by a number of journalists and commentators including Glenn Greenwald,  Michael Scheuer and even Joel Gillin of the New Republic.   That such a disaster, with the resulting waves of refugees entering Europe and the killing of Ethiopian Christians along the Mediterranean Sea by ISIS forces having failed to put a dent in Hillary’s march toward the White House,  seems to indicate that the GOP is just along for the ride.

Once again, we have had another case of political theater inside the Beltway where players from the opposing parties engage in mock battle without much substance being accomplished.  More misery in North Africa will come for many people, including Christians whose ancestors have dwelled there for over thousands of years.  As they are being killed and their monasteries suffer destruction, Hillary will probably be dancing with her mate Bill in 2017 at the Inaugural ball if all goes according to plan.  The voters who will put her in power should heed the late H.L. Mencken’s wisdom when he said:  “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”
